About Lucy Brookes
Lucy’s journey towards becoming a registered Hypnotherapist and Counsellor was significantly influenced by the life-altering impact of the pandemic. In January 2019, she held the position of Divisional Operations Manager for a health club chain, teaching seven weekly spin classes, and enjoying financial stability. Her life appeared orderly to her social media acquaintances.
However, the advent of Covid-19 brought about a dramatic change. Lucy’s spin classes vanished, and her partner and daughter were furloughed. Simultaneously, the gyms under her supervision were closed, with their owners grappling with a crisis. The resultant stress and strain had a profound effect on her well-being, as the emotional relief she derived from teaching her classes was no longer available.
As lockdown measures endured, Lucy found herself on furlough for a brief three-week period. This pause allowed her to reflect on her life, which had been a whirlwind of activity for a quarter of a century. Instead of idly passing the time with Netflix, she resolved to make the most of this opportunity.
Taking her initial step, Lucy, alongside her daughter, embarked on mental health awareness training. It was during this training that she experienced a significant epiphany. Lucy realized that her past interactions with individuals grappling with mental health issues had been inadequate, influenced by personal biases stemming from her father’s breakdown when she was 19. In retrospect, she acknowledged that her perception of mental health was less than compassionate, shaped by the impact of her father’s illness during her formative years. Furthermore, her generation adhered to the "pull yourself together" and "don’t display vulnerability in public" ethos.
Upon returning to her work, Lucy approached her responsibilities with an altered perspective. In July 2020, the tragic suicides of two former colleagues from their fitness community during the lockdown period deeply affected her. The severe repercussions of isolation and lockdown measures became evident.
Lucy grappled with a host of questions: Could she have done more to prevent these heart-wrenching events? Should she have reached out to offer support? What kind of impact would her involvement have had? It was at this juncture that she recognized her need to contribute more proactively to her workplace teams.
While she had previously focused on improving people’s physical health, she began pondering her role in aiding their mental well-being. It was her daughter who suggested that she explore the path of becoming a Counsellor. Subsequently, Lucy delved into research and decided to enrol in a three-year program to become a hypnotherapist and Counsellor. This decision marked a significant turning point in her career.
Today, Lucy operates a Hypnotherapy and Counselling clinic, situated within a private studio in Coventry. Her practice is dedicated to assisting individuals in their journey towards happier and healthier lives.
